I hate Progressives anyway. Distracting meter. Feeding frenzy when unusually high. Bank awkwardly placed at cocktail waitress doorway. Annoying, ornery regulars. It's not a good time at all. I'm miserable there.

Wow. The Must Hit By meter is a great insight. I will certainly attempt to learn more. I assume that they are also prevalent in VP machines.
I wouldn't say prevalent on VP machines.
The only one I have ever seen is at stations properties where they offer a must hit by jackpot completely independent to the VP game. It's just randomly awarded.
Also these type of jackpots were once legal in Missouri, but now are currently banned. :( When I'm out of state, I don't scout them often, but I have rarely found them in a state worth caring about.

I have never seen a "Must hit by" machine. I see a lot of "Maximum Jackpot amount" machines though (progressives). This makes me wonder, does the percent of each bet going towards the progressive cease being taken when it reaches that point or do they keep it and add it to there own return on the game? There is nothing stated to indicate the game will "hit" soon after it reaches the max jackpot amount. It just stops climbing.
Must hits are slots that must pay the jackpot before a certain amount. Say the jackpot starts at 250 dollars but must hit before 500 dollars. So if you see the jackpot at say 497 you know it must hit before 500. It can hit at any amount but will be paid out before it reaches 500.
These are in almost all casinos. They often have 2 or 3 jackpots with different must hit by totals on the same machine.

You sit at a bank of two identical machines. One is a Must Hit Mega of $500 ,currently at $442. and a minor of $50, currently at $32.
Other machines payouts are currently $273 and $26.
Do you play the first because its been longer between payouts, or is the second machine hot?

I'll keep an eye out for them. Never actually looked for them before.

I never sit at any slot for long. I bet max coins, but I never feed a slot waiting for it to pay off. If I hit a hot machine, I keep strict cash out limits and move with my winnings. I never sit at a so called "hot machine" trying to wring out the last jackpot. If nothing happens in a dozen hands, I'm gone. This may hurt me long term, but I'm about capturing my wins not feeding them back into the machine.I am not an "expert" slot player (if there is such a thing). I know luck when I see it and I know what works for me. My biggest enemy is greed. If I treat every win as an uncommon event, I do OK. If I start believing there is some magic strategy that will eventually change bad luck into good, I am a lamb to the slaughter. Slot machines are seriously negative blood sucking monsters designed to do one thing, move money from your wallet to the casino. The only way to keep that from happening is to hit and run away as fast a possible. I am ahead this year on slots about $2K. I am behind on VP about the same. The best thing about playing slots is the casino loves you for it, so the comps are near double VP.

If I ever do summon up the courage to play slots, it would be $60 max. Three twenties flying out of my wallet on such a frivolous, mindless game is all I care to donate.

$60 a day is a good number, just have enough discipline to hold yourself to it. If you bet $5 a hand, $20 gives you a minimum of 4 tries to walk away happy. With $60, you can try at least 3 machines. You will be disappointed often. With newer slots, it's all about hitting the bonus rounds. If you are lucky enough to hit them while betting big, you can cash tickets of $500 or more. If this happens, fight the urge to put the money back in the machine. Don't worry about the Grand Jackpots, they will take care of themselves. Most people sit at a slot all day and make minimum bets. When betting small your wins are small so you have no incentive to leave. If you do this I guarantee you will go home broke the majority of the time.I don't think anyone can become rich playing slots. However, I find them a nice change of pace from playing VP all day. If you don't get sucked into the vortex of casino riches and keep your head about it, I think most VP players would benefit from some slot play. If nothing else, your comps and free play will increase significantly.

There are must hit slots that are positive EV. Just watch how many dollars it takes to add 1 cent to the jackpot and calculate when the slot goes positive.
There are other positive opportunities for slots in the casino but not going to get into that right now.
