Playing Bonus Poker and Aces and Faces like JOB

Post by aurora3140 »

Hello, everyone!Could anyone please tell me whether or not it would be very detrimental for me to use Jacks or Better strategy when playing Aces and Faces and Bonus Poker?I've used training mode on all three and it seems like the holds are the same.  If there are differences, I haven't come across any yet.I'm sorry if someone has answered this before.  I hope it's not too common a question.Thank you for your help!Corinne

At the recreational level, the three are fairly close. At more advanced levels there are a number of differences. But, since pay schedule is an important part of strategy and you didn't mention that, I'm guessing you're a recreational player.

Thank you for your response!  You confirmed my hunch was that the strategies are similar, but I see that the differences are apparent to professional players.I've been playing video poker for about 5 years, but I've only recently started playing games other than JOB and Deuces Wild.  I guess I'd be considered a recreational player since I'm pretty clueless about pay tables other than knowing that 9/6 JOB is best and to look for full pay DW, but I'm interested in playing correctly as well.  If I use the default pay tables for this site's single-hand games as examples - 9/5 JOB, 7/5 BP (50 for a SF), and 7/5 for Aces and Faces - are there examples of specific hands where my holds would be different across the three games?Maybe I should have posted this in the rec forum.  I'm sorry if this was the wrong place to post.

If you are looking for mathematical answers, this is the right forum. If you want magic beans that will help you overcome reality and lose less over time, try the voodoo section. I mean the recreational section.
Most players on this site are recreational. Some of us base our play on millions of simulations that show the right play, some insist they have reinvented the wheel and that wobble you see is actually a good thing.

Thank you for the reply, billryan!I've read some of the posts on the rec forum and it seems to be less about correct holds and stuff and more about betting strategies.  The only way I'm really interested in losing less is by making the best hold decisions for each hand.  However, I admit that many of the posts on the strategy forum go over my head.   I hope I'll start to understand more with time.I guess if the answer to my question is that playing Bonus Poker and Aces and Faces like Jacks or Better results in a very small decrease in payback percentage, then I'm satisfied for now until I learn better.  However, if there are specific holds for JOB that would be glaring mistakes for the other games, I'd like to know sooner than later, lol!

I don't play Aces so I can't help you out, except to say some of the best math minds in the game post in this forum. Dancer is perhaps the leading author and teacher on the planet, and Alpax shares incredible mathematical understanding of different games.
Welcome.

"Financial suicide" may be a little strong. As long as people are only betting what they can afford to lose, it might just be "financially draining." Nobody would ever want to put as much coin-in through these pay tables as Bob Dancer does on his games of choice, that is for absolute certain.

That's a good point, Mr. Dancer and Eduardo.  Since I do play for money, using this site's pay tables as examples doesn't do me any good if they aren't the same as the ones at my local casinos.  And if the real-life pay tables are the same or worse than these, I probably shouldn't play as often as I do (even if my bank roll is very small compared to some that I've read here).I'm going to one of my locals this afternoon.  I'll be sure to write down what the pay tables are for these games and report back.I'm just tired of only Jacks or Better and DW and wanted to add some variety. I really do appreciate everyone's help!

Ok, so my local doesn't have Aces and Faces.  I was pretty sad about that. Also,
there aren't any bonus quads in the Bonus Poker game at the casino.
It's pretty weird since the version of Bonus Poker on this site has
them.  At the casino, the paying hands are the same as Jacks or Better,
but it pays more for 4 of a kind at the expense of the full house pay.Jacks or Better:Bonus Poker:Even
with my limited understanding of pay tables, it seems to me that it
would be best to stick with JOB over my casino's version of Bonus Poker,
right? (Even though I was lucky enough to hit 4oak 10s during my
session yesterday .)  I
think there was a game at my local that looked like this site's version
of Bonus Poker (there were bonus quads, but no kickers).  I want to say
it was labeled as Double Double Bonus Poker, but I'm pretty sure that DDB is
supposed to have kickers.   I'll have to check it out the next time I
go.Maybe my casino's Game Kings are jacked up, lol!Anyway, I'm sorry for rambling.  This is fun and I'm looking forward to learning more from you guys!
