Keep 2 of a kind vs flush?

Post by SaraTG »

Hello. When I play the VP machines up in WV they have the ones that "suggest" what cards you should hold (Which of course you can do or keep others). Every time it deals me say 4 cards of one suit but there are also 2 cards of the same value (i. e. 4D, JD, 10D, 6D, 4C) it suggests I keep the 2 same value cards. I always go for the 4 to a flush hand. Is keeping the 2 same # cards indeed the better play as the machine seems to be suggesting?

This depends on a whole slew of things. What game are you playing? Is the pair already a paid hand? Really depends on what game, (job,dw,db,jk,ddb,tdb,etc...........)

I always play it by feel...i usually play DDBP so I'm usually trying to pull a 4kind , My question would be how many 2 of a kinds should I blow off for the royal?

Unfortunately, you can't trust auto-hold in WV. I've read that some have been programmed to hold the hand with the highest winning percentage, not best overall return.

Correct.

The purpose of auto-hold on these machines is

1. Speed up the play so the casino can make its money faster
2. Teach you to play badly

Auto-hold on new IGT machines is pretty good and dependable. In WV, these must be old IGT machines or off-brand machines (or perhaps video lottery machines). If they were off-brand machines, I would be very suspicious about whether they dealt fairly. Some states (like the racinos in NY) have state-sponsored machines that ON PURPOSE cheat the player (more correctly: they intentionally do not deal the cards in a way that each unseen card has an equal chance of appearing next) in order to help the state balance its budget.

I am personally not certain the machines in WV are fair. Which would mean I would never play there until I was certain.

It can even be different depending on the pay table. DW is one example, where on some, you hold a pair over a flush draw(4,3,2,2,1) and others you hold the flush draw over the pair(4,4,3,2,1).

Yeah, in DW you hang on to those deuces for dear life.

FAA, I expect that Mr. Stark is talking about hands without a deuce. The numbers in parentheses are the lower end of the pay schedule, the single-coin payoffs for (quads, full house, flush, straight, trips).
