Good Fortune

Post by onemoretry »

There are still good honest people in this world, and Saturday we were lucky enough to have encountered one.

We are at Harrahs Laughlin, and Saturday morning played a while on some multiline 25c deuces machines before moving to the 50 line nickel ones we prefer.

Soon after we started playing there, we were approached by a casino staff person. Once he confirmed my wife's identity, he presented her with the cash out ticket she had unknowingly left in the previous machine, and which had been turned into the casino by the person who found it. Perhaps I'm too cynical, but I have to wonder how often would that occur.

Her good fortune continued that day on that 50 line 5c machine. Playing deuces wild bonus she was dealt the four deuces, and on the draw managed to get the ace kicker seven times, for a jackpot of 57,000 nickels. Later in the session she was dealt five aces. She ended up plus about $4200 for the session.

What a great story OMT, congrats to your wife as it really was her day. And for the person who turned in the ticket: may they be blessed with good fortune down the road too. I'm guessing that they are the type of person who received satisfaction in knowing they did something honest when nobody was looking and that - is the mark of a truly honest person.

Awesome story....

OMT, did you by chance ask the casino if they know who the person is? I hope the casino rewarded the individual, even though I agree with Ted that knowing you are doing someone a huge favor is often reward enough. This is exceptional and deserves tangible benefits....if it were me, I would insist upon giving the individual something, like a free steak dinner or a gift certificate valued appropriately in relation to the ticket your wife lost.

Having left a 500 dollar ticket in a machine once at a bar in Vegas to hit the bathroom real quick and asking the bartender to watch it, only to return and find it gone (immediately cashed by a homeless person who returned the next day to stalk me), I am happy you had a good ending.

Congratulations, OMT couple. So much was that TITO anyway?
DB, entrusting the LV bartender?! You know what they say about a fool and his money. You're hardly a fool. But that was Hall of Shame worthy!

The TITO was for a touch over $100. And, DB, regrettably, we did not ask for the name of our benefactor. To be honest, we were so taken aback by the surprise visit from the casino person that all we could think to do right then was to thank him - and then he was gone.

I am embarrassed to say that I have done this dumb thing (leaving a ticket behind) four times over the many years I've been playing video poker. In one case, the casino was able to identify the person who cashed it, and the funds were returned to me. The other three were all total losses, and' frankly, it's what I deserved.

The casino won't reward you if you do this. What if you "find" a friend's ticket? Then that's profit for you and your friend. Obviously this scenario is unlikely, but the threat of it will keep the casino from giving incentives for being a good samaritan.

I turned in $100 once. They found them eventually. I don't recall how I did on the karma scoreboard that night. The turning in the ticket was the memorable thing.

Also convinced a guy to call security when a ticket got stolen at the bar at Gold Strike Tunica for $390. He got handpaid since it had yet to be cashed.

I did have good karma that night though as I hit a Royal for $800 about 8 hours earlier.

And I'm guessing the homeless guy stealing the ticket is a likely assumption? Or did you actually confront him the next night? Either way that's a bummer. What casino was that at?

And glad everything worked out great, OMT!

Just the other day, I left a $300 ticket in a machine at the Borgata. Went back and a woman playing nearby told me that an employee noticed and took the ticket. Went to security and they had it and gave it to me. We all do stupid things occasionally.
